Sindy Sinn x young henrys: limited edition merch capsule

When we think about the best mates of Young Henrys there’s one name that comes straight to mind, Sindy Sinn.

For those of you who don’t know, Sindy has been an innate part of Young Henrys creative fabric since the very beginning. Not only is he a top bloke, his creativity is something we’re all constantly admiring. So when we embarked on the journey of celebrating the product that put us on the map, ‘Newtowner’, it was only natural that its self proclaimed “number one drinker” got to bring a fresh perspective to the good old faithful.

So friends, we introduce you the super-limited, get-it-while-it’s-hot Sindy Sinn x Newtowner merch capsule, available via pre-order only, celebrating our flagship brew and one of the “best independent beers” of the year.

Catch Sindy’s insights below and get to know the brain behind these designs, and let’s be honest, the face behind the some of the best murals in the country - not that we’re biased or anything…

P.S Get shopping - because once presale closes - they’re gone. No Waste. Never Restocked. Forever Special. Serving The People.

Q: You’ve been with YH since the early days, what is it like diving into Newtowner for this merch capsule?

“It’s true! Yeah, one day Oscar called me up, asking if I could help paint a sign because Young Henrys had just gotten “ON TAP AT THE COURTY!”. And honestly, time flies when you’re working with mates and have a beer in your hand. We’ve collaborated on some huge stuff over the years, and so many of the best ideas have started right there at the Tasting Bar with a pint of Newtowner. I’ve been a loyal Newtowner fan since day one, it’s hands-down my top pick from YH. So when Osk reached out about creating a range of artwork revisiting the almighty Newtowner, I was all in. Designing this range was both quite the task and a privilege because Newtowner isn’t just a drink; from its origin story (the radius!) to where we are now, it’s more than just a beer. And I was f@#king stoked to take on the challenge of turning that Newtowner legacy into fresh artwork that celebrates what it means to the locals.”

Q: How did you approach designing something fresh for such a familiar beer?

“Well, if you’re gonna draw flowers you gotta go look at some, right? So I grabbed myself a sixer and refreshed my memory, haha! And I made a long list of concepts, which actually came surprisingly easy. If anything, whittling them down was the hard part. But we landed on a mix that really captures the full vibe of Newtowner. I remember watching the music video for Motörhead’s ‘Killed by Death’ where Lemmy rides a motorbike out of the grave, and I thought “that’s the f@#king coolest shit I’ve ever seen”. So the first concept is loosely based around “My Fave From The Grave”.

We also ran with “Old Faithful”, showing a cool dude reaching into his beer fridge and fishing out a Newtowner past a rainbow of other craft beers. It’s an experience I know well, reaching into a cold esky “trying to find my f@#king Newtowners mannnn” haha. That’s how we approached it, we made it mega-awesome and mega-relatable. We did what we do best. And instead of collaborating with a bar or band like we normally do, we addressed the love letter out to Newtowner. No wheels were reinvented in the making of these designs.”

Q: How does your relationship with Newtowner as a drinker influence your artwork for it?

“When I’m designing for Newtowner, I think of it like creating something for an old mate, a mate I know crazy-well (maybe too well) and really want to do justice by. Newtowner makes me think of all my mates catching up at the tasting bar, plus the ones I’ve met through Young Henrys, and I wanted to capture all their personalities in the artwork. It’s impossible to please everyone with one design, that’ll never happen. So working on a range meant I could show a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Go sit in the tasting bar under all the skull artwork, watch mates smashing pints together while others roll up on motorcycles out front, and it’ll all make sense…”

Q: Do you have a particular record you associate with being creative? What were you listening to during this particular creative process?

“Yeah I like to get myself all setup and go deep into the bubble when I’m working on stuff. And music is a big part of that. Everything from Black Sabbath, Clutch, The Hives, Bronx, Viagra Boys, Metz, Fidlar … I love a bit of dark, fuzzy, pounding mess. C.O.F.F.I.N makes it onto the playlist a lot. Black Pumas have some killer albums. Honestly, I could go on forever listing bands, but when I think Newtowner I need some swagger, denim and distortion.”

Q: What challenges or surprises did you encounter in the creative process for this project?

“One of the biggest challenges was whittling down the concepts, I came in with about ten sketches ready to go. Laid them out in front of the team, drank a couple beers, and started narrowing it down while gasbagging. Some of the other concepts might pop up in other projects, but what we’ve got here is a strong buffet for the everyday Newtowner drinker, a nice mix of radness and nostalgia. To kick things off, we’re doing a presale, which lets us get more rad designs in front of everyone. I hope we get to do this with other beers in the Young Henrys range, each beer has its whole own visual vocabulary. It’s a fun challenge. More beers!”

Q: What’s your favourite thing about Newtowner and working with a brand who you know so well and love so much?

“Putting it in my mouuthhh! Nah nah, but I’ve been a freelance illustrator for over a hundred thousand years and have worked on two million projects. But the shorthand I have when working with Young Henrys is like non-other. We know and respect each other, and we’re a solid unit. Young Henrys has always been a great brand to work with, because they’re all about cool artwork first. The logo doesn’t have to be big or perfect, the colours can be whatever works and they respect the artist and their artwork … and that only comes from a great team. As I’m sure you can imagine, meetings with Young Henrys are always lotsa fun.”

Q: Where's your favourite place to drink Newtowner?

“I love sitting at the tasting bar with a pint of Newtowner, on a f@#king hot Friday, waiting for my d!ckh@d mates to arrive. Thanks for having me on another great project guys. Looking forward to seeing this one come to life. Drink Newtowner. X”
