ROADIES: Sydney’s Hip Hop scene with Naz from One Day

Our mate Naz from One Day

Our Sydney Fringe Festival BEST SERVED LOUD gig at The Albion Hotel in Parramatta is just around the corner! We’re getting pretty damn pumped to bring BSL to Western Sydney for the first time with an epic lineup dedicated to local hip hop, curated by our Newtown neighbourinos at One Day Entertainment. To learn more about the One Day crew, the lineup, and the Sydney hip hop scene as a whole, we caught up with the collective’s own Nazlican Eran for the first instalment of our Roadies Playlist series. Read the yarn below.

G’day Naz! First up, can you tell us about One Day and what you’re up to?

NE: Yo! So, One Day is an artist-led hip hop collective responsible for timeless heaters such as 'Love Me Less' and the legendary One Day Sunday block parties that were held across Sydney and Perth. In 2021 Nick Lupi and Adit Gauchan turned their signs to management full time and we launched with an incredible roster and space in Newtown. I'm currently the project manager at One Day which means I oversee the whole roster and work with the team on campaigns and strategies, in addition to working across our touring arm and programs such as ONE OFF TRAKS.

YH: What made you want to get involved?

NE: The team. I love the way that Nick and Adit lead One Day, and how they treat not only the artists, but everyone around them. They really set the precedent on how you're meant to treat people and move in the industry and I've never had that before. We're a small team (4 including some killer interns shout out Tiana and Simon) but we get shit done. Our love and belief in all of the artists we're working with is the true driving force behind everything we do.

Shout out Minori too, our creative producer. She is the backbone of our company!

YH: What kind of artists are on the roster and who are you most excited about at the moment?

NE: We have an eclectic mix of writers, producers and artists and they're all amazing in their own right! Tiffi is someone to keep an eye on - the Western Sydney pop act is someone we are so excited about as she is in the midst of releasing her second EP 'dating pool' - she was also the first non hip hop act we signed to One Day!

We're also home to Grammy-nominated, ARIA-award winning producer 18YOMAN, acclaimed producer and solo artist Glenn Hopper aka LEN20, Platinum-certified alt-rap group Triple One, as well as another act from Melbourne but I can't say too much about her....yet!

YH: We're so stoked to partnering with One Day for our first ever Western Sydney Best Served Loud. What made you want to get involved?

NE: I'm so excited too! Over the last year or so I've become more involved with the Western Sydney music scene so when YH came to me with this opportunity, I did not take it lightly. I truely believe Western Sydney is home to some of the most free-thinking, diverse and innovative creative so to be able to put some of those artists on is a dream come true. Aligning with Young Henrys, who do so much for the scene and community just felt right.

YH: What can you tell us about the artists playing on the night? What can punters expect?

NE: We've got the BADDEST lineup of Western Sydney music and it is a show not to be missed. Tap in with Becca Hatch for West Syd anthems like '2560' and 'Blessed', Vv Pete for the hardest hip hop coming out of Aus right now with 'Jordan 1s', Blacktown's Isaac Puerile if you love Dominic Fike with a bit more edge, and Western Sydney's best kept secret Sollyy. In between the massive live sets we'll have Parra princess DJ Slays keeping the energy up and Adele, the host of acclaimed Western Sydney FBi radio show Snacc Pacc will be keeping you company all night. And if that wasn't enough - we'll have tooth gems by the coolest Niche Pleasures if you're looking to leave the event looking better than before!*

*Something very new to us at YH…

YH: Why should everyone be listening to Sydney hip hop right now?

NE: Everyone should be listening to the hip hop coming out of this country - period. With Sydney though, it's so exciting because there are so many different pockets of hip hop within the overall landscape. We're such a new industry, a new scene so everything you're hearing now hasn't been done before. We're legit experiencing the new wave so it's really special to be a part of it.

YH: Righto, playlist time, whip us into 10 songs that best represent Sydney's hip hop scene at the moment.

THIS IS SO HARD TO DO IN 10 SONGS BUT I TRIED OK!
